We are experienced at treating a wide variety of issues having a negative effect on the normal growth of children and adolescents.
We work with the parents of children to help them improve their parenting, communication and relationship building.
Typically, this office sees children ages 4- 6 years old.
We also see preteens until about age 14 or 15, when adolescents usually start having more independent thoughts on how things should go in life. This can sometimes lead to rebellious behavior if not dealt with correctly by adults who are supposed to teach independence but instead give mixed messages confusing youth, leading to more significant difficulties later down the road.
We utilize play therapy methods combined alongside education plans to get what they need individually.
We Specialize In Treating...
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD- It is common for parents of ADHD children to come in expressing concern over their child's recent change in grades or behaviors at school, arguing at home with siblings or parents, frequent meltdowns and tantrums, perhaps a sudden lack of interest in activities that used to bring them joy, refusal to do homework without being sent into an emotional meltdown first… It isn't just about finding treatment options for ADHD kids and adults but also education on ADHD- supportive teaching methods, ADHD planning tools, ADHD coaching for parents, ADHD coping skills training that will be useful in their ADHD life.
- Anxiety Disorders - These are the most common mental illness among children. It is even more prevalent than depression or ADHD. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, about 1 in 5 youth have had a diagnosable anxiety disorder at some point in their live and up to half of all children who get diagnosed with ADHD also have an accompanying anxiety diagnosis. In addition, it is estimated that 80% of adults with ADHD have had a prior history of an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders can vary from being very mild and passing quickly to being severe enough to impact daily life . Sometimes anxiety is a result of ADHD self- medication through substances such as alcohol or drugs, so ADHD needs to be ruled out first before anxiety is accurately diagnosed.
- Intermittent Explosive Disorder has been linked to ADHD and bipolar disorder with aggressive / explosive episodes connected to impulsivity, irritability and novelty seeking behavior also linked to ADHD. Intermittent explosive disorder is often accompanied by ADHD.
- Anger Management that affect how children learn and behave in school. Children who have ADHD are at a higher risk of exhibiting aggression, delinquency and disruptive classroom behaviors. ADHD is definitely an under- diagnosis in kids who also have ADHD- comorbidity. ADHD is often missed because ADHD kids appear to be inattentive rather than disruptive and disruptive behaviors are not always noticed by parents until they become extreme, the kid gets suspended from school or worse still, arrested for committing a crime.
